Physiotherapist vs Exercise Physiologist – Who Should You See?

At Momentum Therapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists work closely together in our clinics and gyms to help you move better, feel stronger and stay active — but they each play a different role in your care.

See a Physiotherapist if you:

  • Have a new injury, pain or flare-up
  • Need diagnosis, hands-on treatment or pain relief
  • Are recovering after surgery or injury
  • Experience dizziness, balance problems or mobility issues
  • Need help with acute rehabilitation or movement assessment

Physiotherapists focus on assessing, diagnosing and treating pain, injuries and movement conditions to help you recover safely and regain function.

See an Exercise Physiologist if you:

  • Need a structured exercise program for a chronic health condition
  • Want to build strength, fitness, balance or confidence with movement
  • Are managing conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, neurological conditions, diabetes or heart disease
  • Need ongoing support to improve mobility, independence and long-term health
  • Want supervised exercise in a safe and supportive environment

Exercise Physiologists specialise in clinical exercise programs designed to improve health, function and quality of life through movement and exercise.

Not Sure Which One is Right for You?

That’s okay — our team can help guide you to the right clinician based on your goals, symptoms and stage of recovery. In many cases, Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists work together as part of your rehabilitation journey.

Team approach to care

Team approach to care The team in the studio comprises Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists, and allied health assistants.

The roles do blur, and in general the physiotherapist tends to help set up the programs for people with less mobility , or help differentiate the health issues; while the exercise physiologist is progressing all the programs and particularly focused on strength, fitness and integration into more mobility tasks. The AHAs are supporting you where you need assistance with exercises, but little exercise correction or progression.

The programs extend out into the community via links with Momentum Therapy, home visits and hydrotherapy.
